fear of writing (for j.d.) | 2005

non arrival | "It's not easy to improvise, it's the most difficult thing to do. Even when one improvises in front of a camera or microphone, one ventriloquizes or leaves another to speak in one's place the schemas and languages that are already there. There are already a great number of prescriptions that are prescribed in our memory and in our culture. All the names are already preprogrammed. It's already the names that inhibit our ability to ever really improvise." — Jacques Derrida, Screenplay and Essays on the Film Derrida by Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering Kofman, Routledge, New York 2005 [92:93]

"Non-arrival is unpresentable; even if it were to arrive or occur, it wouldn't present anything. Non-arrival doesn't refer to a not yet realized, or not yet real or present, possibility. It always remains what it is: possible and in this way, unanticipatable." — Catherine Malabou and Jacques Derrida, Counterpath : Traveling with Jacques Derrida, Perface, p. 150

Philip Schuessler [info]
Fairfax
(2000) 12'03'' is a collage piece that interweaves and layers a series of dramatic narratives. Approximately 85 –90 percent of the sounds were derived from raw or manipulated vocal sources. The work is a study in the relaying of a story and how the devices of dramatic storytelling can become a story in and of themselves. Furthermore, the work explores the inherent musical qualities implied in the inflected human voice.

Void Chapel (2004) 8'10'' for two-channel digital audio was composed at the Computer Music Studio of the State University of New York at Stony Brook. The piece establishes various taxonomies of sonic presence as main criteria of formal development. The clarity and “integrity” of some sounds contrasts other sounds of more diffuse quality, and the gap between these two types of sounds is widened in some parts of the piece while bridged in others. Void Chapel is dedicated to Kari Besharse.

Danilo Girardi
Danilo Girardi, born in Bari in 1982 in a musicians’ family, starter very soon to study flute under the guidance of his father. Together with literary studies, he continued his musical studies attending "N. Piccinni" Conservatory in Bari completing brilliantly his diploma in 2001. He completed his studies attending the Italian Flute Academy in Rome under guidance of Raymond Guiot and is currently attending the course of "Music and new Technologies" (under guidance of Francesco Scagliola) as well as the course of "Experimental Composition" (under guidance of Biagio Putignano), both at the Conservatory of Bari. He is recently performing electronic music with the music research group "Sin[x]Thésis" formed in 2003 and was part of the acusmatic performers selected by Jonathan Prager fro "Silence 2004" and "Silence 2005".
Crisi di lamelle meccaniche (2004) 7'46''
Hairesis
(2003) 6'09''
Quiet flow of crystal waters (2003) 5'50''
Written in 2003 using the software "Csound" with oscillators sounds (Additive synthesis) and manipulated samples of these sounds with a final construction in the software "Audition".
Dovrei Alzarmi (2005) 9'20''
Written in 2005 using the software "Csound" with oscillators sounds (Ring modulation, Amplitude modulation and Frequency modulation) and manipulated samples of these sounds with a final construction in the software "Audition". There is also a use of the software "Mathematica" in the generation and calculation of some events for scores. I write this piece to represent the meaning and situations of this poetry of my friend Paolo Celi:
Cade una goccia, dal rubinettoaperto
appena. e un'altra
se ne aggiunge, e un'altra ancora
colpo su colpo confonde.
e un battere di chiodi
sulle mani.
Dovrei alzarmi,
e chiuderlo.
So in the piece there are a lot of elements of this text like simulation of fallen drops with oscillators sounds and later an accumulation process and the elaboration of micro elements of the voice that recite the poetry. This is the results of one year of work and research for a new kind of sound and i made also a second version of this piece with the elaboration of single words of this poetry.
