www.theperfumedgarden.net is the website of the turkish pavilion at the

sentences carefully extracted as hypertexts of what has been written in
the biennale publication of the turkish pavilion, dated 05.06.2001
WEST EATS EAST - EAST BEATS WEST
theperfumedgarden: An In(de)terminable Oscillation Between Orient&Occident
/ NUOVAICONA IS A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION founded in Venice since 1993 /
In
a Turkish Pavilion ties between Venice and the Turks are too many to be
mentioned here and it is culturally natural and historically consequential
that Turkish artists should have their permanent place in the Venice
Biennale 2001 just in a <KIOSK>
/ ORIENTALISM means to learn about the EAST - orientalism is the
belittlement of the east by the west - outside of europe the rest of the
world is stagnant -the european learns and the eastern man is IDLE -GOTTES
IS ORIENT, GOTTES IST OKZIDENT- the concept of "orientalism" today... yet
nadir shah translated the history into voltaire's language ; west started
to know east better after the excavations of mesopotamia - today's
orientalists have a different personality /
EAST will become
the specimen that represents montesqieux's despotism...
the history of the east however, will be necessarily one of lack and
deprivation, THE east is a self enclosed mass far removed from progress
-when two opposing forces are brought to face one another , it is not
peaceful coexistence but violent hierarchy --- the aim therefore in
freezing the east within this type of binarism , is the demonstration of
the dynamism and superiority of the west in opposition to the static
nature of the eest- in 1848 , Renan wrote that philology was the positive
science of spritual objects. There remains a problem: the objectified east
and the subjectified west /
Orient: Site of Sexuality, Dream&Phantasy -unconscious fantasies, desires,
fears and dreams- veil is a multilayered signifier that which hides and
conceals the orient from apprehension... like a privileged concept
metaphoring the construction of the reality of the orient and its very
ontology... THE MTENOMIC association of the figure of the veil and the
orient constitute an over determined totality whose residue persists in
the unconscious of the subject /
JAPAN is a fully westernised fully eastern culture... Today, with
Globalisation, the whole world is on its way to becoming one big west...
West will also disappear for without an east to orient itself, the West
is
no longer an Occident - the Botanical metaphor is, how to cultivate a
viable plant with different opposite? roots and trunk and branches and
leaves and what sort of fruit it will bear? Gandhi being an oxford trained
lawyer returned back to his civilisation, and revolutionised and
modernised one of the more eastern civilisations. /
BE IT WEST or BE IT EAST, both are the same -in the west are golden wheat
fields and in the east are floods... the east is blind and deaf is the
west, said my father the great king COMMAGENE/
EVERY PLACE HAS A SOUTH referring to another, the notion of idendity
becomes meaningful when it is contrasted with the notion of others...
powerless and powerful finds expression in different types of
nationalisms... - we are better than them is almost like an inevitable
need picturing us and it keeps moderm men and women fully happy... with
the south we almost always refer to the less capable, powerless other...
the westernisation projects involved change of costumes...west is the
best...to love the best and hate the rest...it was jalal al-e ahmad who
delienated 'gharbzadegi' the weststruckness and westoxifideness, than
native orientalism /
a la recherche de l'autre perdu - the other is always far enough and never
to merge...beyond the border... in huntington's phrasing, "the velvet
curtain" -of culture- , has replaced the iron curtain -of ideology-. if
tastiness increases in direct proportion of differences, what can be
tastier than the opposition of irreducibles and the clash of the eternal
opposites...the west was curious about the east, it discovered it and
exploited it. Finally, it stomached it. Now, in order to locate the other,
it must look inside. The border has been crossed, masticated, dismantled.
Now each country, each individual is searching for his (own) other. Every
time it is found it will be devoured with irresistible appetite, its
hunger unstilled until all differences are erased. The other continues
its
resistance in fiction and through language. For now. /
